Inspired by the traditional rice barns used by the local villagers, that are characterized by their context, the main building features similar circular forms that blend seamlessly into its rural landscape surrounded by rice fields. Yangnar Studio adopted a technique from the local architectural context, that allows to extract and presuppose wooden structures, contributing to the walls of the building, creating a connection with the rice’s pressure from the inside. The team experimented with extending the wooden beam structure that support the roof beam, and mix prefabricate system of wooden work that made from their studio and assembly with concrete structure on site.

The design essentially thrives on the willingness to allow the environment to shape its identity, rather than imposing a rigid architectural blueprint. Visitors, upon entering this space, discover a unique experience of open-air seating amid two small buildings, a testament to the ‘in-between’ spaces, subject to the ever-changing seasons and climate. It defies conventional coffee shop boundaries, inviting interaction with the space in an unconventional manner.

The site offered lush open green spaces around the main building which allowed the architects to introduce a pavilion in the middle, creating an outdoor experience for the visitors. However, unlike newer explorations using bamboo where the materials undergoes chemical treatments to bend into different forms, the architects chose to keep the design straight-forward, by using traditional techniques. The bamboo framework is tightly lashed together with fishing net rope, a technique mastered by local wisdom. The rooftop filters light temporarily, providing shade during specific times of the day, creating an ever-changing, outdoor experience. The space remains flexible, awaiting the day when the young trees planted with the original intent of the owner mature and take their place.

Thingamajiggy’s design allows its environment to shape its identity, defying he conventional layout and boundaries of coffee shops and inviting its users to interact with the space and its context.
