Founders Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslier had cofounded Skipping Rocks Lab while studying Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art. The team collaborated with chemists and chemical engineers from Imperial College to test Ooho at running events, festivals, and takeaway shops, which led them to work on scalable manufacturing technology. Nota had been developed by the Skipping Rocks Lab and in 2019 the startup decided to give it a name and became Notpla.

Growing up to 1m per day, brown seaweed is perhaps nature’s most renewable resource and does not need fresh water or fertilizer. Notpla’s technology creates plastic from these seaweeds creating a material that biodegrades naturally in 4-6 weeks and is home compostable.

Notpla sachets are one of their products, made from seaweed and can be used to package a wide range of sauces and condiments, from 10-60ml. True to their mission, the sachets are 100% biodegradable. Notpla has teamed up with Heinz to provide an alternative to single-use plastic sauce sachets that are easy to use and can be disposed of along with other food waste. Notpla sachets are also edible. Similar to these sachets, Notpla Pipettes are also 100% natural, home compostable, vegan membrane pipettes, that can be used to package oil in takeouts or lunch boxes.

Notpla has also created a greaseproof, water-resistant, nonplastic coating that can be used in takeout containers instead of plastic, helping it to biodegrade easily, unlike typical takeout containers that have a thin plastic coating that makes it non-recyclable and non-compostable. Notpla also makes takeaway boxes. Apart from these products, Notpla also makes synthetic-free paper, using seaweed, which can be useful for an infinite number of applications.
