Form and Refine is a Danish design brand that creates sustainable products, by carefully selecting pure and local materials near the workshops, thereby reducing their carbon dioxide footprint. Founded in 2018 by Helle Herman Mortensen, Jonas Herman Pedersen and Lasse Lund Lauridsen, their collections reflect the essence of Nordic design, which they refine throughout the years.
Form and refine values the aesthetics, function and materials quality and uses skilled craftsmen to create their beautiful masterpieces. They try to keep the natural side of the materials they use, especially with wood, hence their furniture collection has its own expression and distinctive traits depending on the grains, knots and coloration. Their collection ranges from furniture to textile to ceramics.
The Alcoa ceramics line by Form and Refine is made from the finest white clay from Portugal, and produced by highly skilled local craftsmen. The minimal ceramics has taut geometrical design but the slightly gritty exterior beautifully captures the contrast of its natural elements to the man-made design. Portugal’s traditions of ceramic pottery are still dominant in the culture, and can be experienced in the streets of Portugal. Form and Refine partners with a small pottery in the region of Alcobaça, whose skills and knowledge of the material and craftsmanship have been passed on for centuries. Every piece is thoroughly inspected and finished by hand.
The Alcoa line of sustainable stoneware is durable, waterproof and comfortably raw to touch, with the natural elegance of the material highlighted. While the earthenware is often red or orange in hues and fired at lowest temperature, the stoneware is fired at a higher temperature. These different process for each gives its different character; the earthenware is hardened but brittle and slightly porous, while the stoneware gets a denser, more durable and waterproof characteristics. Porcelain is also fired at the highest degrees, and its products are usually very think, glistening, frail and of the finest quality.
With the unique privilege of collaborating closely with the Damsbo Forest, a vast forest situated on the Danish island Funen, Form and Refine creates its unique furniture from the wood in Damsbo. Hence the products are completely made in Denmark, from scratch. Damsbo Forest has been and is still managed very carefully. By managing the forest sustainably with a natural regeneration throughout the years, it is a completely natural action to harvest some trees each year. Form and Refine uses a certain umber of cubic meters each year, and they do not involve in mass production. Damsbo Danish oak is one of the finest oak available, and its long growth and high-density quality makes it high in demand. With distinctly defined grains and an elegant color, Damsbo oak is durable, long-lasting and resistant to warping.
The Aymara textile line made completely from the finest and purest alpaca wool produced by highly skilled craftsman in Bolivia. A combination resulting in a simply elegant product. Bolivia is known for their expertise in alpaca wool, dating back thousands of years. Form and Refine’s local partner in Bolivia is a cooperative owned by 400 alpaca farmers and knitters, whose skills and knowledge of the material and the craftmanship have been passed on from generation to generation. The alpaca-fiber is silky soft and superior in its abilities. It does not retain water and effectively resists solar radiation. It has a thermal insulating effect making it warm and comfortable while still being lightweight. All these amazing characteristics has given the fiber its reputation of being “The Fibre of Gods”.
