AllBirds are definitely one of the biggest brands when it comes to sustainable footwear. Described as “The World’s Most Comfortable Shoe”, by TIME Magazine, AllBirds has managed to combine the both comfort of the user as well as the sustainability of the product. Looking for alternatives to the synthetic materials used in the manufacture of most of the footwear out there today, Co-founder Tim Brown set out to develop an alternative that is both more comfortable and more sustainable. After years if researching, Tim teamed up with Zwillinger, an engineer and renewable expert. Together they crafted this extraordinary wool fabric, made specifically for footwear.
All Birds’ collection of Wool Runners uses merino wool that is sourced from sustainable ZQ certified farms in New Zealand, where sheep outnumbers humans about six to one. AllBirds also ensure the welfare of the animals. The process for this wool uses 60% less energy than materials traditionally used in synthetic shoes. The material is moisture-wicking and breathable, while continuing to be extremely soft and comfortable.
Their Tree Runners collection uses Tencel, which is Eucalyptus tree pulp that is sourced from sustainable, FSC certified farms in South Africa. This material uses 95% less water than traditional cotton and cuts carbon footptint in half. Their fiber along with a clean closed-loop process provides a naturally-derived, renewable material that is much easier on the environment than traditional fabrics, The material is comfortable, breathable and silky-smooth.
