India, with its rapidly increasing population has urged a few startups and companies to take initiatives to meet the demands of the  population, especially when it comes to clean water supply. One such initiative is Absolute Water, a water recovery management firm in New Delhi, that is providing citizens with clean, affordable water.

Sewage water is recycled, using a low maintenance system that is affordable and easy to use for laymen. The treated water is bacteria and pathogen free. Absolute Water was one of the first of its kind in the country, that converted sewage into drinking water quality as per WHO standards. The cost per liter of treated water is the lowest in the country at 8 paise/litre ( less than a cent). Increase in usage of treated water as compared to the regular supply, is beneficial as it does not deplete the ground water. This  could help in an economically viable and environmentally sound system, that can be implemented across the country easily.

Being probably the first woman to take this initiative, and one of the early innovators in this field, the process of making this system happen was a challenge for the founder, Smita Singhal, in the beginning, but with her determination and hard-work, this project has turned to be a success and helps in providing many citizens affordable, safe water.
“We wanted to provide safe and clean water that could run through ones taps, without worrying about the source of he same” says  Singhal.

“The biggest motivation and fuel to gear ourselves to be better, stronger and more focused on our goal, was when we were selected by the UNDP (United Nations Development Fund) , as one of the 5 changemakers in the sustainability field and meeting 3 or more of the SDG’s and were invited to do a TED talk in front of the UN Gen Sect last year.”, says Singhal, who was also selected by the Discover Channel as one of the 8 innovators in the field of sustainability.
